Mekong Delta

Slowing Everything Down

After the pace and chaos of Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta feels like a completely different world.

Quieter. Slower. More spaced out.

It’s the kind of place where life happens on the water.

First Impressions

Leaving the city behind, everything starts to change pretty quickly.

The roads open up, buildings thin out, and before long, the landscape shifts into rivers, canals, and endless greenery. You can feel the pace drop almost immediately.

There’s no rush out here.

Boats replace scooters. Narrow waterways replace busy streets. And instead of horns and traffic, it’s the sound of water, engines humming, and people going about their day.

Life on the Water

The Mekong Delta revolves around the river.

Homes sit along the banks. Boats move goods, people, food… everything. It’s not something set up for tourists, it’s just how life works.

Watching it all unfold is what makes the experience.

You see people cooking, selling, transporting, and living, all connected by the water. It’s simple in a lot of ways, but also incredibly efficient.

There’s a rhythm to it, just like in the city, but completely different.

A Different Side of Vietnam

What stood out most was how different it felt from everywhere else we’d been.

Ho Chi Minh City is intense and fast. The Mekong Delta is calm and steady.

It gives you a better understanding of Vietnam as a whole. Not just the cities, but how people live outside of them.

It’s easy to forget how diverse a country can be until you see places like this.

Travelling as a Family

With the kids, the Mekong Delta was a really nice change of pace.

There’s space to breathe. Things move slower. It’s easier to just take it all in without feeling overwhelmed.

Boat rides, small villages, local interactions… it’s the kind of experience that doesn’t need to be rushed or over-planned.

The kids were just as interested watching how things worked as they were doing anything structured.

Looking Back

The Mekong Delta isn’t loud or dramatic.

It doesn’t try to impress you.

But that’s exactly why it stands out.

It shows you a different side of Vietnam. A slower, more grounded way of life that’s just as important as everything happening in the cities.
