Ho Chi Minh City

Fast, Loud, and Full of Life

Ho Chi Minh City hits you straight away.

The noise, the movement, the sheer number of people and scooters… it’s a lot. After stepping off the plane, it feels like you’ve landed in the middle of controlled chaos. Traffic flows in every direction, horns are constant, and crossing the road feels like a game of timing and trust.

But once that initial shock settles, you start to see the rhythm in it all.

There’s a flow to the chaos.

First Impressions

Coming back to Ho Chi Minh City with the kids was a completely different experience to when Kia and I first visited back in 2012.

This time, everything felt more intense, not because the city had changed, but because we were seeing it through a different lens. Slower, more aware, and with two kids in tow.

The energy of the city is hard to describe. It’s busy, but it works. People move with purpose. Street vendors line the footpaths. Cafes spill out onto the streets. Life happens everywhere, all at once.

It’s not polished. It’s real.

Life on the Streets

Most of what makes Ho Chi Minh City special happens at street level.

Tiny plastic stools set up on the side of the road. Fresh food being cooked right in front of you. Locals sitting shoulder to shoulder, eating, talking, watching the world go by.

You don’t need to search for anything. It’s all just there.

The food is next level. Simple, fresh, and full of flavour. Some of the best meals we had were the ones we almost walked past.

And the coffee culture… strong, slow, and everywhere.

The Chaos That Works

At first, the traffic feels overwhelming.

Thousands of scooters weaving through intersections, barely slowing down. No clear gaps. No obvious rules.

But then you realise… there is a system.

You don’t wait for a break in traffic. You become part of it. Step out slowly, keep moving, and trust that everything will flow around you.

It sounds wild, but it works.

And once you figure that out, the city becomes a lot easier to navigate.

History Beneath the Surface

Ho Chi Minh City isn’t just fast-paced and modern. There’s a lot of history here, and it sits just below the surface.

Visiting places like the Cu Chi Tunnels adds a completely different perspective to what you’re seeing around you. It gives context to the city, the people, and how Vietnam has become what it is today.

It’s not always easy to take in, but it’s important.

Travelling as a Family

Experiencing Ho Chi Minh City with the kids brought a different kind of awareness.

You notice things more. You slow down. You pick your moments.

It’s not the kind of place where you try to do everything. It’s better to take it in bit by bit, find your rhythm, and let the city come to you.

The kids adapted quicker than we expected. Once they got used to the noise and movement, they were just as curious as we were.

Looking Back

Ho Chi Minh City is one of those places that stays with you.

It’s not relaxing. It’s not quiet. It doesn’t try to be.

But it’s alive.

And that’s what makes it so good.
