Day 117 – Rainy Travel Day to Lecce
A wet but memorable travel day from Bari to Lecce. From espresso stops and chess games to a scenic train ride and arriving in a stunning stone apartment, this was slow travel at its best.
Day 116 - Rainy Wanders Through Bari’s Old Town
A rainy day in Bari leads us through the narrow medieval streets of Bari Vecchia where we discover ancient cart tracks, quiet pasta streets and seaside views along the Adriatic.
Day 115 - From Sicily to Bari, And a Surprise Race on the Waterfront
A smooth travel day from Palermo to Bari turns into an unexpected highlight when we discover live race cars blasting along the Bari foreshore.
Day 114 - A Golden Sunset and Final Night in Cefalù, Sicily
Our final full day in Sicily was slow, simple, and perfect. After a windy morning by the beach we headed into Cefalù for sunset, wandering medieval streets, eating pizza by the ocean and finishing the night with gelato under the cathedral lights.
Day 113 – Planning Fatigue, Sicilian Pastries, and a Colourful Beach Afternoon
After days of planning fatigue, we finally lock in the next stage of our journey from Sicily to Puglia. Along the way we discover traditional Sicilian pastries, build rock forts on the beach, and reflect on life without tablets while worldschooling our kids.
Day 112 - Slow Days, Beach Time and Planning the Road Ahead
A quiet day in Sicily filled with schoolwork, beach time and travel planning as we try to figure out the next stage of our journey from Bari to Lake Garda.
Day 111 - Getting Lost in Cefalù
A day exploring Cefalù in Sicily including a hike up La Rocca to the castle ruins, wandering medieval streets, beach time with the kids and navigating Sicily’s famously chaotic driving.
Day 110 - Beach Glass and Slow Living in Campofelice di Roccella
Our first full day in Campofelice di Roccella was spent running along the waterfront, hunting for colourful beach glass, swimming in the chilly Mediterranean and ending the evening with a driftwood fire by the sea.
Day 109 - Driving Across Sicily: Giardini Naxos to Campofelice di Roccella
Day 109 of our worldschooling adventure saw us drive across Sicily from Giardini Naxos to Campofelice di Roccella near Cefalù. A scenic inland route around Mount Etna, winding mountain highways and our first taste of Sicily’s northern coastline.
Day 108 – Hiking Mount Etna
Our Mount Etna adventure didn’t start smoothly after police stopped us from driving up the mountain without snow chains. Thanks to some friendly Italians we made it to the summit, hiking through snow, volcanic ash and even Sahara Desert sand to reach 3,000 metres on Europe’s most active volcano.
Day 107 – Dirt Bikes on the Beach
A quiet morning in Giardini Naxos turns into an unexpected adventure when Levi and Emmett discover a dirt bike race on the beach while Maddie and Kia spend the afternoon baking together.
Day 106 – A Slow Day in Sicily Planning the Next Stage of Our Family Adventure
Rain kept us close to the apartment in Sicily, giving us time to tackle one of the hardest parts of long-term travel, planning what comes next. Between schoolwork, emails, and rock painting at the beach, the day turned into hours of maps, ideas, and trying to piece together the next stage of our journey.
Day 105 - Exploring Alcantara Gorge and a Godfather Town in Sicily
A slow Sicilian morning, a strong 5km run, and an afternoon exploring Alcantara Gorge before winding through mountain roads to the famous Godfather town of Savoca.
Day 104 - The Crystal-Clear Waters of Isola Bella
Day 104 of our worldschooling adventure takes us to Isola Bella in Sicily. Crystal clear water, rocky beaches, driftwood play, island exploring and a relaxing family afternoon on the Ionian Sea.
Day 103 - First Full Day in Sicily: Exploring Giardini Naxos, Castelmola and the Coast
Our first full day in Sicily was spent exploring the rocky beaches of Giardini Naxos, driving the winding roads up to Castelmola above Taormina and discovering just how good Italian gelato really is.
Day 102 - Transport day. Goodbye Austria. Hello Sicily.
A 4am start, a two-and-a-half-hour drive to Vienna, airport chaos, and a flight south to Sicily. Day 102 marked the end of our time in Austria and the beginning of a new chapter beneath the snow-covered peak of Mount Etna in Giardini Naxos.
Day 101 - Last Full Day in Austria
Our final full day in Austria was spent packing bags, cleaning the hire car, returning ski gear and soaking in the countryside one last time. While Emmett spent the day with friends, Maddie stayed back crafting and repurposing her clothes. The evening finished with a farewell pizza dinner with the Austrian and Norwegian families who made this winter chapter so memorable.
Day 100 - Cold Water, Packed Bags & The End of Austria
Day 100 of our worldschooling journey was a slower day in Austria. While Emmett spent the day playing with local friends, we packed our bags for the flight to Sicily, took a freezing dip in an alpine river, and reflected on the end of an unforgettable chapter in the Austrian Alps.
Day 99 - Last Runs at Kasberg
Our final day skiing at Kasberg in Scharnstein was filled with fast runs, forest detours, mountain top drinks and the quiet sadness of closing a chapter we didn’t expect to love so much.
Day 98 - Our Earliest Start and One Big Second Last Day on the Slopes
Clear expectations changed the tone of our morning and set up one of our biggest days yet on the slopes at Kasberg. Blues, reds, a black run and even a ski snowboard swap made Day 98 one to remember.
