Day 114 - A Golden Sunset and Final Night in Cefalù, Sicily

Our final full day in Sicily started slowly.

The plan had been to get into Palermo early and spend the day exploring the city, but when we woke up the weather had other ideas. The sky was grey, a light drizzle hung in the air, and the whole morning felt like it wanted to move at a slower pace.

So we leaned into it.

The kids played around the house while Kia and I began quietly packing things away, organising bags, and slowly getting ourselves ready for the next leg of the journey. Travel days always seem easier when the chaos is handled the day before.

By mid-morning we decided to head down to the beach one last time.

The wind had picked up and the sea looked rough, but it still felt right to spend some time there. Swimming was quickly ruled out the moment we felt the cold wind rolling off the water, but that didn’t stop the kids from turning it into a rock-skipping session.

For the next hour or two we stood along the shoreline skipping stones, watching the waves crash in and enjoying the simple rhythm of being by the sea. There’s something about the Sicilian coastline that makes you slow down without even trying.

Eventually we headed back to the house and put together lunch using whatever food we had left. We’d done a good job using up most of our groceries over the week, so it was a bit of a random assortment of leftovers, but it did the job.

The afternoon stayed quiet.

More packing, a bit of tidying, and a few last checks to make sure everything was ready for tomorrow’s travel day. By late afternoon the drizzle had cleared and the light started breaking through the clouds.

That’s when we decided to head into Cefalù for the evening.

The drive in was beautiful. As the sun dropped toward the horizon it lit the entire town in this warm golden glow. From the harbour you could see the old buildings catching the light while a sailboat drifted quietly out on the water. It looked like something straight out of a postcard.

There were far more people around than when we visited earlier in the week.

The town had a real energy to it.

We wandered into the old medieval streets, getting lost in the maze of narrow alleyways, stone walls and tiny shops. Cefalù is one of those places that feels alive with history. Every corner seems to lead somewhere interesting.

Eventually we found a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the ocean and decided that was the spot for dinner.

Pizza all around.

Cold beers for me, wine for Kia, and lemon tonic for the kids.

We sat there laughing, watching the sea and soaking up our final night in Sicily. There was something really satisfying about the moment. The house was packed, tomorrow’s travel plans were sorted, and we felt good about the direction of the journey ahead.

After dinner we wandered into the main square near the cathedral and grabbed gelato.

The cathedral itself was glowing under the evening lights and when we stepped closer we realised a huge mass was taking place inside. The doors were open and the sound of singing echoed out into the square.

It was beautiful.

Nearby there was live music playing and people were scattered around the square enjoying the evening. We strolled around for a while longer, letting the atmosphere sink in.

Eventually the long day caught up with me.

We packed it up, walked back through the winding streets, and made the drive home.

The kids were straight into bed when we got back.

Tomorrow would be a travel day, and the next chapter of the journey was waiting.

But for now, Sicily had given us a pretty perfect final evening.
