San Foca

First Impressions

San Foca felt completely different to both Bari and Lecce.

After the cities, arriving in this small coastal town felt like we could finally exhale a little. The pace slowed right down. The roads were quieter, the air smelled like the ocean, and life immediately felt more relaxed.

We arrived from Lecce after organising a private transfer across to the coast and quickly realised this was going to be less about sightseeing and more about settling into daily life for a while.

That was exactly what we needed.

Our apartment was only a short walk from the water, and straight away we noticed how seasonal the town felt. We arrived before peak summer crowds, so parts of San Foca were still waking up for the season. Some restaurants were only just opening back up, beaches were quiet, and there were days where it felt like we almost had sections of the coastline to ourselves.

What We Found in San Foca

San Foca sits along the Adriatic coast in the Salento region of Puglia and feels far more like a local summer town than a major tourist destination.

Itโ€™s small.

Simple.

Very beach-focused.

Historically, the coastline around San Foca was important for fishing and trade across the Adriatic Sea, and you still see that connection today through the small harbour, fishing boats, and seafood restaurants scattered through town.

The coastline itself was probably the biggest surprise.

Crystal clear water.

Rocky sections mixed with sandy beaches.

Little swimming coves.

Long coastal walking paths.

Compared to the bigger cities, life here revolved around the beach, food, and evenings outdoors.

Highlights

Settling Into Routine

San Foca was where we properly slowed down.

The kids started building little routines. We found local supermarkets, bakeries, walking routes, playgrounds, and favourite cafes. Most mornings started slowly before wandering down towards the beach or heading out for little day trips around the region.

Long-term travel can feel chaotic when youโ€™re constantly moving, so having a place where daily life became simple again was really refreshing.

The Coastline

The water around San Foca honestly looked ridiculous some days.

Bright turquoise water, clear enough to see straight to the bottom, with little rocky inlets and beaches scattered along the coastline.

Even simple afternoon walks along the waterfront became one of our favourite things to do.

Food and Lifestyle

Like the rest of Puglia, life happened outdoors.

Evenings were social without feeling overly busy. Families wandered the streets, people gathered for aperitivo, and restaurants slowly filled as the sun went down.

The food stayed simple and fresh.

Fresh bread.

Pasta.

Pizza.

Aperol Spritz.

Gelato almost every night.

One thing we really noticed in San Foca was how much slower everything felt compared to Australia. No one seemed rushed. People took their time eating, walking, talking, and just existing.

Looking Back

San Foca ended up being one of the easiest places for us to live during our travels.

Not because it had huge attractions or famous landmarks, but because everyday life felt good there.

It was simple.

Relaxed.

Affordable compared to bigger Italian destinations.

And it gave us the chance to stop travelling quite so hard for a while and settle into more of a normal rhythm again.

For us, San Foca became less about sightseeing and more about experiencing what slower coastal living in southern Italy actually feels like.
