Day 162 - A Slow Marrakech Reset After the Sahara
After our big desert adventure, we needed, a slower reset day.
We all woke around 8am and eased into the morning. Kia made us coffees in the apartment, small Moroccan-style espressos that definitely packed a punch but were pretty bitter. Emmett was in a bit of a come down funk after the last few big days, so we need med to get out. Once 9am rolled around, we headed out for breakfast and found a small local spot just a short walk from our accommodation.
Like we’ve done a few times here, we translated the menu and decided to just give it a go. It ended up being one of those simple meals that really hits the spot. We ordered omelettes, coffees for Kia and I, fresh orange juices for the kids, traditional Moroccan mint tea, and flat Moroccan breads served with honey and cheese. Everything was fresh, simple and absolutely delicious. I also discovered that adding a cube of sugar to the coffee completely changed it and took away that intense bitterness.
After breakfast, we wandered back to our accommodation and kept the slow pace going. We chilled out for most of the day, I checked work emails (not much happening there), updated a few blogs on the website, and we looked over some upcoming trip plans. I still have work to get done, but realistically that can wait until we reach Essaouira.
Because breakfast was so filling and late, we skipped lunch altogether.
By mid-afternoon, the kids were desperate for a swim, so I took them down to the pools while Kia stayed back for a proper rest. Our accommodation has three pools, a large deep pool, a kids’ splash pool, and a pool with a slide. Naturally, the slide pool became the winner. The kids bounced between all three at first, but once they found some other kids to play with, they were set. Two solid hours later, they were finally ready to leave.
By then, we were all hungry and ready for dinner. We found another local traditional spot nearby and honestly, it was another win. Kia and I went for shawarma while the kids stuck with pizza, and everything was excellent.
After dinner, it was back home and into bed fairly early because tomorrow brings another early start and another adventure.
Sometimes on long-term travel, the slower days end up being just as important as the big ones. Day 162 was one of those days. A chance to recharge, reset, and simply enjoy where we are without rushing around.
