Day 147 - The Day Emmett Cooked His Own Breakfast and Owned It

Kia and I woke up reasonably early again, but just stayed in bed for a bit, half awake and not really in a rush to get moving. We could hear some banging and clanging out in the kitchen, but it wasn’t chaotic. No fighting, no drama. So we just left it and let the kids do their thing.

Eventually I got up and walked out to find Emmett fully dressed and ready to go. Shoes on, hat, sunglasses, jumper. The house was wide open and he looked like he’d been up for hours.

I asked him what he’d been up to and he casually said he’d already had breakfast. He’d cooked himself some eggs and used one of the leftover bread rolls from yesterday to make a little egg burger.

Turns out he’d been up, wandered around for a bit, went back to bed, got up again, and eventually convinced Maddie to come out and turn the hot plate on for him. She did that, then went straight back to bed while he handled the rest. Cooked his eggs, made his breakfast, cleaned up. Done.

It was one of those moments where you just stand there and think, how did we get here already?

They were both pretty keen to get out and about, but we held them back for a bit. Kia and I had our coffees, I checked emails and got back to a few people about some work opportunities. The kids went out for a bit of a roam but Emmett had to be back for tennis at 9:30, so he and Kia headed up for that.

Maddie went off on her bike and just cruised around, and I got stuck into updating my CV to send out to a few contacts.

Once Kia got back from tennis, Emmett disappeared off roaming again with his friend and Maddie, and I headed out for a run. The goal was a 10K along the lake. I headed off mid-morning and managed a solid run. Nothing crazy, but it felt good to get it done.

Kia had her exercise class while I was out, and when I got back we sat down together for a bit of a late breakfast, early lunch. The kids drifted back in and ate as well, and Emmett’s mate came over so we all just hung out the front for a while.

Eventually the kids wanted to head to the pool. We got chatting to Emmett’s friend’s dad for ages and then all wandered over together. I jumped in for a quick dip after the run while the kids stayed in for a couple of hours.

We had the kids booked into a cooking lesson that afternoon, which was something Emmett’s friend’s dad had organised. He runs these casual little sessions for whoever’s around and keen to join in.

We took them over around three and for the next hour they made pasta from scratch. Proper knife techniques, step-by-step process, learning as they went. It wasn’t just throwing ingredients together. There was some real teaching in it.

And the end result was unreal. Proper fresh pasta and sauce, and they were stoked with what they’d made.

Kia and I just sat back and watched, which was nice. One of those moments where you don’t have to organise anything, just be there.

After that, Kia was pretty done. It had been a big social day and she was ready to switch off.

I ran into our Norwegian mates who were heading for a game of ping pong, so I joined them for a bit while Kia headed back to chill.

By the time I got back it was close to dinner, so I cooked something simple and we were planning on an early night.

That didn’t quite happen.

There was a parents versus kids soccer game on at 8pm and both Maddie and Emmett were keen to go. So we headed over and jumped in.

It was good fun, but after about half an hour Emmett had had enough. The older kids weren’t really passing to the younger ones and he was getting frustrated not getting much of the ball. Fair enough.

So we called it there, headed back, got the kids into bed around 9, and Kia and I were not far behind.

Lights out around 10, which is still late for us lately, but earlier than the last few nights.

Tomorrow’s a big one. We’re heading to Movieland with a big group from the hub, so hopefully everyone wakes up fresh and ready to go.
