Week Four: The Highs, the Lows & Everything In Between
Week 4 felt like a real turning point. Less novelty shock, more rhythm. We aren’t just travelling anymore, we’re living. Work, family, fitness, friendships, emotional moments, and unexpected challenges all started weaving together into something that felt surprisingly normal… and deeply meaningful.
The Highs
Shared adventures and excursions
Day 22’s full excursion day set the tone, vans, buses, long journeys, and those conversations with people we wouldn’t normally meet back home. We could feel the world opening up, not just geographically but socially.Family connection moments
Breakfasts together became a real anchor. Maddie stepping into her little “host” role, Emmett drifting in and out with new friends. Small things, but they spoke volumes about how settled the kids were becoming.Community vibes
We weren’t just surrounded by families, we were part of the community. The casual chats at breakfast, hanging by the pool, shared laughs, kids organising themselves into games, it all felt easy and natural.Simple joy moments
Skipping ropes turning into a spontaneous kids’ gathering. Ice creams (even the questionable durian ones). The talent show. Pool hangs. These weren’t bucket-list moments, they were life moments, and they mattered more.
The Lows
Physical niggles and fatigue
The tight hamstring/glute kept reminding me that i’m not invincible, especially in heat and with cumulative load. Missing runs wasn’t ideal mentally, even when it was the right call physically.Work pressure creeping in
Even in paradise, work still demanded attention. Some days felt chopped up, emails, fixes, “just one more thing” and it occasionally pulled me out of the present moment.Emotional bumps with the kids
Day 27 was a tough one. Emmett getting upset, things escalating physically, and navigating that in a foreign place without the usual support systems was draining and confronting.Little frustrations
Bad coffee. Slightly off breakfasts. Things not quite working as expected. Small stuff, but when stacked together, we felt it.
Standout Moments
The skipping rope scene
Emmett, Kia and I, then one kid, then another, then suddenly skipping ropes everywhere. Teaching, laughing, watching confidence build in real time. That was a snapshot of exactly why we’re doing this trip. The talent show
Maddie up there with her friend, singing and dancing. Pride, nerves, courage all wrapped into one moment that will stick with Kia and I for a long time.Connections with other families
Those conversations stood out. The shared values, relaxed energy, curiosity about each other’s lives. We could feel genuine mutual respect forming.Choosing rest without guilt
Day 28’s slower pace, sleeping in, an easy run, pool time, and letting the day unfold. We didn’t feel like we were “wasting” the day. We let it be what it needed to be.
Lessons Learnt
Routine creates freedom
The more settled the daily rhythm became, the more space we had mentally and emotionally. Structure didn’t trap us, it supported us.Community matters more than activities
The places were great, but the people made the week. Conversations at breakfast and spontaneous kid-led play created deeper satisfaction than any planned attraction.Parenting doesn’t pause on the road
Emotional moments still happen. Conflict still happens. But handling them together, in new environments, is building resilience.Work doesn’t disappear, but my relationship to it can change
I managed to keep things moving without being consumed by them. Which is a powerful realisation for life beyond this trip.
Reflection
Week 4 felt like a quiet confirmation that we made the right call.
Not because everything was perfect, it wasn’t, but because real life was happening, and we were handling it with more presence, patience, and perspective than we could back home.
We are watching the kids grow in confidence.
We’re learning when to push and when to pause.
This week wasn’t about highlights for Instagram.
It was about integration, blending work, travel, family, health, and community into something that feels sustainable.
And that might be the biggest win of all.
